Solidarity Action with the Caravan for Peace with Justice and Dignity!

20

The over 40,000 victims of Felipe Calderon’s war have to be remembered and not forgotten by impunity and injustice. We don´t want terror and fear to be tools of the government tosilence the people.  We see Pres. Calderon’s war as a profit-making deal with US security and arms corporations to assassinate the Mexican people via the Merida Initiative.

That is why we join the Caravan for Peace with Justice and Dignity that began in Cuernavaca June 4th and will end today, June 10th in Ciudad Juarez, where a National Social Pact will be signed by social organizations and families of the victims of this atrocious war.

Together they demand:

1. Truth and justice for the assassinations committed.
2. An end to the War on Drugs and the use of citizen-run security initiatives.
3. An end to corruption and impunity.
4. An end to profit-making from crime.
5. Attention be paid to the dire situation of youth in order to begin reconstructing the social fabric of society.
6. Participatory democracy, better representative democracy, and democratization of the media.

Ciudad Juarez Ayer y Hoy (2 junio 2011)

12

A report issued this week by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) criticized Mexico's telephone industry for monopoly pricing that overcharged consumers US$13.4 billion per year from 2005 to 2009, leaving many families unable to afford telephone or internet service. Carlos Slim, the world's richest man and owner of TelMex and America Móvil, rejected the report, accusing authors of "pulling data out of thin air." Slim's companies control about three-quarters of Mexico's telephone industry. The Mexican government commissioned the study as part of an ongoing battle between Slim and the National Action Party (PAN). Mexico's telephone industry generates over US$30 billion in sales per year, but the OECD report concluded companies missed out on an additional US$12.4 billion in sales because of high prices.

NEWS AND ANALYSIS JULY 25-31, 2011

1 - OBAMA PLAYS POLITICS WITH IMMIGRATION REFORM
2 - POVERTY INCREASES UNDER CALDERON
3 - GOVERNMENT REDUCES SECURITY AID TO CIUDAD JUAREZ

1 - OBAMA PLAYS POLITICS WITH IMMIGRATION REFORM
President Barack Obama addressed the National Council of La Raza on Monday, promising to keep fighting for immigration reform while blaming Republicans for lack of progress.  Apparently in search of votes for his 2012 campaign, Obama contradicted the political advice of his former Chief of Staff and current Mayor of Chicago, Rahm Emanuel, who worked hard on enhanced border control issues but avoided pro-immigrant measures like the plague.  "We have a system that separates families and punishes innocent young people for their parents' actions by denying them the chance to earn an education," lamented Obama.  It's too bad the President hasn't done anything to rectify this deplorable situation.  Obama won 2/3 of the Latino vote in 2008, and hopes that this fast-growing sector of the electorate will help him to victory in 2012.
