Solidarity Action with the Caravan for Peace with Justice and Dignity!

20

The over 40,000 victims of Felipe Calderon’s war have to be remembered and not forgotten by impunity and injustice. We don´t want terror and fear to be tools of the government tosilence the people.  We see Pres. Calderon’s war as a profit-making deal with US security and arms corporations to assassinate the Mexican people via the Merida Initiative.

That is why we join the Caravan for Peace with Justice and Dignity that began in Cuernavaca June 4th and will end today, June 10th in Ciudad Juarez, where a National Social Pact will be signed by social organizations and families of the victims of this atrocious war.

<--break->

Together they demand:

1. Truth and justice for the assassinations committed.
2. An end to the War on Drugs and the use of citizen-run security initiatives.
3. An end to corruption and impunity.
4. An end to profit-making from crime.
5. Attention be paid to the dire situation of youth in order to begin reconstructing the social fabric of society.
6. Participatory democracy, better representative democracy, and democratization of the media.

Ciudad Juarez Ayer y Hoy (2 junio 2011)

12

1 - ZAPATISTAS DENOUNCE PARAMILITARY ACTIVITY
The Roberto Barrios caracol, a political/cultural center of Zapatista resistance, denounced paramilitary activity that  left the autonomous municipality of La Dignidad under a virtual state of siege.  At least 160 armed paramilitaries surround the community and have established a "permanent presence" on Zapatista lands.  Authorities from Roberto Barrios report armed paramilitaries blocking roads, burning 40 acres of crops, stealing corn harvests and threatening to assassinate people in Zapatista support bases.

Subcomandante Marcos wrote a letter last week addressed to Mexican sociologist Luis Villoro, with significant comments directed to Javier Sicilia and his national peace movement.  Marcos begins with a powerful critique of Mexico’s entire political class, a group of criminals that “don’t understand - their time is up.”  Politicians simulate governing through media representations while the nation falls apart.  Marcos singles out President Felipe Calderon for, among other things, his “war on drugs” waged from the “cartel of Los Pinos” (a reference to Mexico’s White House), and his tendency to “blame the victim,” whether blaming the poor for economic failure, women’s clothing for rapes, or the victims of violence for being “criminals.”

Javier Sicilia, the poet/journalist who inspires a growing national movement against corruption and violence, and Felipe Calderon, the spurious President who initiated a "war on drugs" in 2006 as his signature policy, met on Thursday in a televised encounter at Chapultepec Castle in Mexico City.  Sicilia, always the gentleman, awkwardly embraced Calderon at the end of a contentious three-hour exchange on militarization, social policy, political corruption and ineffective governance.  Unfortunately, the embrace was a photo op, carried on the front pages of many Mexican newspapers.
