The Mexico Solidarity Network and the Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana (UAM)-Xochimilco, one of Mexico's most prestigious public universities, offer six week, 8-credit summer study abroad programs in Mexico. The programs utilize the modular system developed at the UAM. The modular system is a student-centered pedagogy that emphasizes discussion, student presentations, group reflection and integration of theory with hands-on experience. Professors are activist/academics with years of firsthand experience in popular struggles in Mexico and the United States. Courses work includes required readings, discussion-based classes, workshops, field trips, and site visits.

Application procedure

To apply for the Mexico Solidarity Network Study Abroad program:
1) Collect the information on the program (summer syllabus pending...coming soon), and meet with your school's study abroad advisor and/or your academic advisor to confirm that your institution will accredit the program. The program is accredited by the UAM-Xochimilco, one of Mexico's most prestigious public universities. If you need a list of universities that have accepted the program's credit, email us at MSN@MexicoSolidarity.org and we'll be happy to send it to you and/or your academic advisor.

2) Download and complete the application (click here).

3) Forward the final page of the application (Activist or Academic Reference Form) to your references for completion. Ask your references to email the completed forms to MSN@MexicoSolidarity.org .

4) Email all application materials with a $25 non-refundable fee (payable by credit card) before the application deadline to MSN@MexicoSolidarity.org . The application deadline is March 31st.  Each Summer program is limited to 14 students and admissions are on a first come, first serve basis. We expect many more applicants than there are spaces available, so please submit your application as soon as possible. If you don't have a credit card, please send the $25 non-refundable application fee to Mexico Solidarity Network, 3460 W. Lawrence, Chicago, IL 60625.

5) Once we receive your completed application (including letters of reference), we will set up a telephone interview within two weeks. Offers of admission are generally made within two weeks of the interview.

6) Once you are accepted, please send a non-refundable deposit of $500 to confirm your place in the program.

7) Full payment of program fees is due by April 30th. The Mexico Solidarity Network offers a discount of $300 for participants who pay tuition in full by March 15th.

8) You will need to submit a physician's report of a current medical examination. Please make your doctor's appointment early as it can often be difficult to see doctors at the last minute.
Prerequisites
Applicants must be at least 18 years old. Applicants are NOT required to be enrolled in a college or university in order to participate in the program. Preference is given to applicants who exhibit a history of commitment to grassroots political struggles. The ideal applicant is highly motivated and open to new experiences. Youth of color are strongly encouraged to apply.
