The
Guadalupana Torch Run start in Mexico City on october 29
The Asociacion
Tepeyac brings for the fifth consecutive year the Antorcha Guadalupana
from the Basilica de Guadalupe in Mexico City to St. Patricks
Cathedral in New York City.
The Antorcha
Guadalupana is a torch run in relays as a pilgrimage from Mexico
to the United States to celebrate the appearance of the Brown
Virgin of Guadalupe that on December 12, 1531 appeared to a poor
indian named Juan Diego in the hill of Tepeyac, northwest of Mexico
City.
The Antorcha Guadalupana will take 45 days from Mexico City to
New York City stopping in more than 400 parishes. It will begin
with the blessing of the torch on October 29, 2002 at the Basilica
de Guadalupe in Mexico City passing through the mexican states
of Hidalgo, Puebla, Veracruz, and Tamailipas; then, the Mexican
American youth will cross the border with the torch passing through
the states of Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia,
South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia, Washington DC, Maryland,
Delaware, New Jersey and finally getting to New York city where
the youth will arrive approximately at 10am ending with a mass
celebration.
This year's
Antorcha Guadalupana's theme is to carry the message of support
for the a General Amnesty and in support
of the Freedom Act which would legalize
more than 9 million undocumented immigrants in the United States.
In this way they would become legal permanent residents.
Ana
We will hold
an Ecumenical Vigil on Saturday December 7th in Washington
DC in support of the Guadalupana Torch Runners as they arrive
in our town. We urge you to come out and support the runners,
immigrants and a general amnesty. We also urge you to get involved
and to become a runner, a volunteer and a sponsor to make this
event even more successful.
