Immigrant rights

The Mexico Solidarity Network plays a central role in the National Coalition for Amnesty and Dignity for Undocumented Workers . Before September 11, the Coalition was having a great deal of success promoting the legislation calling for a general amnesty for undocumented workers. In the aftermath of September 11, we altered strategies somewhat and are promoting a legislative initiative that would normalize the status of undocumented workers. Much of our work is devoted to developing a national consensus around this new strategy and around popular education work that addresses the new post 9-11 reality for immigrants. There are two distinct target audiences. We will work with immigrant groups to build a consensus around the new legislative initiative and to organize grassroots support. We will work with student and community groups to build understanding for the problems faced by immigrants post 9-11 and to build solidarity with immigrant struggles.

The Mexico Solidarity Network is currently developing a popular education workshop on immigrant rights. The goals are to:

- Expose the real-life problems faced by undocumented workers, and how these problems have been complicated by recent immigrant bashing.

- Understand immigration in the context of corporate-centered globalization.

- Expose the effects that new anti-terrorist legislation will have on immigrant workers.

- Discuss solutions, including a new legislative initiative that would normalize the legal status of undocumented workers.
